November in Transition

As the clocks go back and the nights are drawing in, here’s some Transition to keep you warm through the winter months! This month we have our usual monthly meeting, Repair Cafe (last one of the year!) plus a tree planting in Palmer Park!

Elsewhere around Reading, there’s a talk on water supply and climate change, another chance to get on a permaculture course at Braziers Park, and a talk on sustainable buildings.

Transition Town Reading Meeting: Tuesday 8 November, 7:30pm at Great Expectations Pub.
Come along and discuss all things Transition Town Reading over a pint of beer or cup of tea at the Great Expectation pub (33 London St, Reading RG1 4PS). We can usually be found in the library room or the Christmas room on the left or right hand side as you enter the pub.

This meeting we’ll be particularly discussing planning for 2017 and our Christmas social event..

Cultivations field tree planting, Palmer Park, Saturday 12 November, 11am-3pm
On the 12th November from 11am we are planting a community pack of 420 Woodland Trust Tree saplings in Palmer Park. The tree planting will be close to the fence at the back of the park (next to the railway line), continuing a hedge planted from Palmer Park Avenue. Please bring a digging fork or spade or trowel, gardening gloves etc. It might be muddy, so dress appropriately. This project is supported by the local Green Party, Transition Town Reading and other local groups. We are looking forward to seeing you and planting trees

Repair Cafe at Parkside Cafe, YMCA (Tilehurst): Sunday 20 November, 12-4.30pm

Repair Cafe this month is at Parkside Cafe, YMCA, 34 Parkside Road, Tilehurst, RG30 2DD, 12pm – 4.30pm.

Bring along your broken items to be re-cycled, refreshed and refurbished! Bring them down! Also if you have your own creative project (e.g. sewing, knitting, Raspberry Pi) you’re welcome to bring them along to work on!

Repairs include:

Electronics
IT
Mechanical items
Toys
Sewing, clothing and fabrics
Tool sharpening
In fact, if it’s broken, bring it along and our team of ready repairers will give it a go!

Home made cake, tea and coffee all in plentiful supply.

Everything is free but donations are very welcome to help keep repair cafe (and homemade cake!) going.

Talk on water supply in a changing world, Friday 4 November, 7.45pm at Reading Quaker Meeting house, RG1 2SB
This is the fourth in this series of Reading Climate Forum events.

We live in a water stressed area.

Learn about the impact of climate change on our water supplies with wetter winters and drier summers. Local hydrologist Chris Beales will talk about the current pressures on our local river system, and how climate change is predicted to affect our rivers in the future.

Find out where our drinking water comes from and what we can do to be more efficient in our water use. Michael Bright is a water industry consultant. He will talk about how Thames Water supply water to our homes in Reading. He will discuss some of the challenges and what we can do as individuals to reduce pressure on our water resources.

Introduction to Permaculture, 19-20 November, Braziers Park
The course follows the Permaculture Association curriculum and covers the theory, ethics and principles of permaculture design for sustainability. A design process that can be applied to any project or area of life, it’s not just for gardening.

This inspirational weekend takes place in the beautiful house and grounds of Braziers Park where there is a wealth of permaculture examples. While the course is classroom based there will be lots of outdoor activities and taster sessions from bee-keeping to wood chip heating, coppicing, hedgelaying, composting, water harvesting, community living and more. Participants will put learning into practice and create their own permaculture designs by the end of the course. A big bonfire and merry making will take place on Saturday evening.

Tutors: John Baker and Trish Whitham, with community collaborators and guest speakers. More info and the programme can be found here. Price: £150, including organic lunches and refreshment breaks (concessions available). Additional meals and overnight stays available – POA, please book early.

All courses are held in the main house of Braziers Park surrounded by peaceful countryside in the foothills of the Chilterns.
